Water, water everywhere...
From Sept. 29th - Oct. 6th, torrential rains have caused devastating floods in the Indian states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, claiming over 250 lives and affecting nearly 2 million people. These floods are recorded as being the worst to ravage these states in a 100 years. Roads and farms are submerged in water, putting estimated relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction costs at billions of dollars. Those displaced are suffering acutely due to lack of food and clean water. This is an hour we all must come together and show our wholehearted support for the flood survivors. It is critical that the immediate needs such as food, clean water and medicine are provided to those affected.
“Elsewhere in the district, its the human suffering that stares one in the face - collapsed houses, desperate faces, people running after relief materials, scores of families huddled in temporary shelters and destruction of standing crops on lakhs of hectares of land.”

“More than the government and its agencies, it appeared it was voluntary organisations, NGOs, philanthropists and corporates who pitched in with relief materials.”

UPDATES FROM RAICHUR, KARNATAKA:
Posted 10/19/2009
~70km from Raichur, Karnataka, AID INDIA is supporting relief activities in ~30 villlages through its NGO partner, Jagrutha Mahila Sangathan (JMS). Based on reports from and telephone conversations with JMS, the estimated cost of relief alone in this area is $50000. Unfortunately, due to this area's lack of proximity to Raichur, government-funded relief has been non-existent. Several victims are either living in their destroyred homes, or in tents (see pictures below). Currently, AID INDIA has disbursed $15,000 to the victims. However, rehabilitation is a long-term process and will require various forms of support: emotional, social and of course, financial. WE NEED TO COME TOGETHER TO ASSIST THE VICTIMS, ASAP!
You've probably realized by now that the attention of the media (and perhaps the Indian government) has shifted from this disaster. It is, therefore, our responsibility, to do as much as we can for the flood victims.
